GIE expands its network for Decarbonisation & Security of supply

July 10, 2023

On 1st July, GIE, the European association of infrastructure operators for Renewable, Low-carbon and Natural molecules, welcomed 2 new members, German LNG terminal operator DET and the Hungarian transmission operator FGSZ. It brings the community to 68 members in 25 countries and 3 observers.

 Learn more about GIE members

“GIE members constitute a robust and steadfast network dedicated to gas transport and storage. Our immediate priority centres on preparing Europe for the next winters to actively support European Member States and their citizens. Safeguarding the security of supply in Europe is our key priority. Europe’s journey with our infrastructure doesn’t stop here. Biomethane, a renewable gas generated within Europe, can be directly injected into today’s gas infrastructure with almost no new investments. It emerges as a readily available and economically viable alternative and represents an asset to strengthen Europe energy’s independence and foster sector integration.

We will keep our efforts to nurture the development of the hydrogen economy by retrofitting our infrastructure and supporting innovation . Over the decades, our role will evolve to embrace more significant volumes of renewable and low-carbon gases to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors while bringing the necessary flexibility required by the intermittent RES.

Our industry has pivotal responsibility in Europe’s future and it’s good to welcome those two determined recruits to our membership. Together we will pursue our mission to support the work of the EU institutions with gas market transparency and developments of our industry for energy security and decarbonisation.”
Boyana Achovski, GIE Secretary General

Deutsche Energy Terminal (DET)

In response to the war, Germany made extra efforts to develop fast solutions to strengthen the country’s energy security. As land-based import terminal projects generally require several years for realisation, a short-term solution based on deploying several FSRUs was proposed by the German government. 4 Floating Storage Regasification Units (FSRUs) projects were launched. Deutsche Energy Terminal (DET), an entirely German state-owned entity, will be operating the commercial operations of those terminals.

FGSZ Ltd

FGSZ Ltd is the owner and operator of the Hungarian high-pressure natural gas pipeline system servicing gas distribution companies, power plants and large industrial consumers. The technical standard of the Hungarian transmission system is among the best in the world based on international comparison. FGSZ is a pivotal actor in the gas north-south corridor and ensuing energy security in CEE and SEE regions. The company developed a solid decarbonisation pathway and operated different types of molecules, including renewable, low-carbon and natural gases.

Energy Transition, Innovations & People

On 15-16 June, the 20th GIE Annual Conference welcomed 300 energy sector participants in Riga on an immersive journey, exploring the near, medium, and long-term perspectives of the European Union’s future. Over 50 high-level experts from policymaking, Gas, Wind, Electricity and academia took the floor to tackle the highest topic on the EU agenda. The conference was hosted by Conexus , the unified natural gas transmission and storage operator in Latvia. Market transparency

Earlier this year, the European association of infrastructure operators for Renewable, low-carbon and natural molecules delivered new records for gas market transparency in reaching 100% coverage of the underground storage and LNG terminals facilities in EU27. Discover how much molecules are stored and transported in Europe.
